Statement

My work revolves around the politics and dynamics of women from Istanbul viewed from a semi-outsider perspective. I weave together everyday moments, overheard stories or instants from the news and pop-culture, combined with art history and literature. I explore a specific social climate that I grew up in, touching on subjects of gender, wealth divide, immigration, cultural contradictions, and the desire to live well, if not luxuriously, in a socio-economically crumbling country.

Humour becomes my entry point to taboo subjects, allowing viewers to ease into sensitive issues often concerning Turkish politics. Through visual storytelling, the work offers the viewer to witness Istanbul’s dualities, being situated between East and West, conservative yet lively and vibrant – an experience I now observe from afar and believe deserves to be witnessed by others.

My work highlights the fauna and flora of Istanbul that goes unnoticed. My intention is dual; fascination and critique. I am captivated by the culture that I grew up in yet remain skeptical of its inequalities and illusions. I aim to create a visual record of narratives of my motherland.
